The pig race, held on 30 July, was attended by 27 members and their guests and raised a total of £214

The W.M., David, and his wife, Sarah, organised the practical aspects of the race, with the pigs knitted by Sarah’s auntie. Sarah also provided a selection of cakes, while David donated the wonderful prizes for the sponsor of the winning pig in each race. One prize was a bottle of Winston Churchill’s favourite gin, which was won by HVL member Jake.

The Robinsons—Ian, Clare, Tina and John— having helped Ash and David with setting up the room also helped run the race. Tina and John hosted the races, and Clare and Ian ran the Tote.

Before the pig racing began, Ash and his wife, Marge, provided the catering. They baked a selection of pizzas and placed bowls of salad on the tables. The pizzas were brought out four at a time for guests to help themselves, and they just kept coming. They were amazing, with many guests praising their thin bases. Our in-house chef, Rory, said they were the best pizzas he had tasted in Yorkshire. I would have said, outside of Italy.

The raffle followed, with members and guests donating a number of prizes for the draw.
Finally, after everyone had been wined and dined, it was time for the racing to begin. Three races were planned, but the evening was such fun that a fourth was added as an encore, much to everyone’s delight.

The final word on the pigs comes from the W.M.: “The pigs are now recovering from an arduous evening, but they would be happy to return for another race in the future.”
